The Farrelly Brothers have given us a lot of work, including There's Something About Mary, Osmosis Jones, Shallow Hal, Fever Pitch, and Dumb and Dumber. Their latest film, starring Jack Black and featuring a cameo, had the potential to be incredibly funny, even if it never turned out to be great. The decision to release this Christmas movie with a not-so-family-friendly theme during the holiday season, despite being restricted to a strict streaming schedule, may have been the right decision. The film is perfectly fine and funny in some moments, but in the final minutes it does something most inexcusably ridiculous, tarnishing literally everything it wants to say and do, thereby ruining any good reputation the film had. The film has a foundation reminiscent of the silliest comedies of the 90s, but it all gets handled with a flamethrower in the end. Dear Santa follows Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith), a kid who has a boyfriend, Gibby , a romantic interest in Emma (Kai Cech), and is moving through life... or is as romantic as a teenager can be really.
Liam is a bit of an outsider, but his parents Bill and Molly have different ideas about how to raise Liam and want him to stop believing in Santa Claus. Wanting to continue believing in magic, Liam writes a letter to Santa Claus, but due to his dyslexia he accidentally writes "Dear Satan", introducing him to Satan (Jack Black), the king of the underworld. Satan is never summoned by children, so they make his presence known and Liam and Satan go on an adventure consisting of three wishes. Once the third and final wish is granted, Satan gets Liam's soul, which is funny and silly enough, and then we learn some devastating news about the Turner family. That's why the tension is rising, and Liam supposedly still believes in Santa Claus despite his age, but the emotional gravity and constellation is revealed and subverted in the film's final moments in the most horrifying way, leaving a taste in the mouth that only Satan could truly bear.
