A man is walking alone in the snow. A few hours earlier, on a cold morning, local Romani people left him with his horse. Depending on how you interpret their warning not to go to the abandoned hilltop castle, it can be cruel or comforting. There, they say, only shadows and demons await. An endless nightmare. For FW fans. Having seen Murnau's original film Nosferatu from over a century ago, and many other films set in Bram Stoker's graveyard, there is an undeniable familiarity to all of them. But in an exquisite moment, Robert Eggers' 2024 retelling of the classic vampire story feels strangely fresh.

Eerie | Talking Strange 78:05 Eggers' Nosferatu is the most aesthetically beautiful film adaptation of the Dracula myth and at the same time the most perverse. Like a child delighted in sliding on freshly fallen snow to expose the slush and mud below, Nosferatu '24 revels in its romantic flourishes and allusions while simultaneously wallowing in the rot and festering putrefaction that underlies his fable. It's a film that seeks to dig deep into the soil of the vampire's homeland to find the horrifying (yet strangely alluring) allure that has kept the creature alive for centuries. In doing so, it transforms a Halloween classic into a psycho-sexual tragedy about a young woman and her most coveted suitor: Death.
